Canadian Unitarian Council

The Canadian Unitarian Council is the national association of Unitarian Universalist congregations in Canada. We support spiritual growth, social justice, and community well-being by offering resources to congregations, organizing educational programs, fostering leadership, and collaborating with other groups. We also provide grants that further our charitable and faith-based mission.

Our Mission

The Canadian Unitarian Council (CUC) exists to grow, support, and connect Unitarian Universalist communities across Canada. We are committed to empowering individuals and congregations to live out Unitarian Universalist principles—respect for the inherent worth of all people, compassion, equity, justice, and a responsible search for truth. Through collaborative programs, leadership development, and interfaith engagement, we work to promote spiritual growth, social responsibility, and a connected, compassionate world.

Our History

Founded in 1961, the Canadian Unitarian Council has been a beacon of liberal religion in Canada for over six decades. Our formation marked a pivotal step in uniting Unitarian and Universalist traditions nationally. Since then, the CUC has evolved into a dynamic support system for congregations across the country. Rooted in a history of inclusion, activism, and spiritual exploration, we continue to build on our legacy of advancing justice, nurturing community, and cultivating open-hearted, inclusive spaces for all.

What We Do

The Canadian Unitarian Council supports congregations with leadership training, spiritual resources, and community-building initiatives. We offer programs for youth, young adults, and adults seeking deeper engagement with Unitarian Universalist values. We work with other faith and justice organizations to amplify impact, and provide funding to initiatives aligned with our principles. From national gatherings to grassroots support, we help create thriving, justice-centered congregations.

Key Activities

Our key activities include leadership training, spiritual development, social justice advocacy, and community building. We organize regional and national gatherings to foster unity and share best practices. We develop resources for worship, education, and governance. Through grants and mentorship, we support congregational growth and innovation. We also represent Unitarian Universalist voices in national discussions on human rights, environmental stewardship, and equity.

Upcoming Events

Throughout the year, the CUC hosts a variety of events including our Annual Conference and Meeting, national webinars, youth retreats, and spiritual leadership workshops. These gatherings offer opportunities for learning, networking, and inspiration. We also support regional events organized by congregations and affiliated groups. All events are designed to foster connection, deepen spiritual exploration, and equip communities to live their values in meaningful ways.
